For point defence 5 Albatros D III fighters were stationed at the base.
For storage and maintenance of the planes a hangar was built in the southern part of the base area. A landing field was laid out in front of the hangar. The levelling of the field was rough and it was never improved. As a result most of the planes based in Tønder were eventually damaged in landing accidents.
In the end the airdefense with locally based fighters was abandoned. The last plane left Tønder on the March 6, 1918. When the Royal Navy attacked the Zeppelinbase later that year the only resistance was small arms fire.
The aircraft hangar is still in good condition 80 yers after its construction.
The dimensions of the hangar are: length 240 feet, height 36 feet , width 75 feet.
